THE Brosnans CENTRA Fastnet Triathlon 2016 is the 12th Triathlon event held in the beautiful tourist village of Schull in West Cork.

A National Series race, the Fastnet Triathlon will have upwards of 300 participants – from the Elite athletes who are competing in the National Series, to those who are just trying their hand at multi-sport.

This year’s race takes place on Saturday June 11th at 10.30am, from the slipway at Schull Community College’s Sailing Centre.

The Schull race, considered a Sprint Distance, constists of a 750m swim in Schull harbour, a 20k bike ride, out to Ballyrisode and back, and a 5k run along the picturesque Colla Road.

The Fastnet Triathlon brings returning athletes yearly to Schull, with one participant having raced all 12 events. While as a National Series race, this is a serious event, the organisers also wish to ensure it has a huge fun element and of course, it’s hard to beat the beautiful scenery encountered along the Wild Atlantic Way while racing.

This year’s top athletes will complete the gruelling course in under an hour and others competing for fun would expect to finish in under two hours, with plenty of time afterwards to unwind at the post-Triathlon Party.

‘Schull is a special place where all the family can enjoy the magic of West Cork,’ said a spokesperson. ‘While the energetic race their race, those who wish for a quieter time can browse the shops and café in the village. Anyone can come along and take part or just enjoy the fun atmosphere all weekend long.
