The success of Courtmacsherry's Community Shop has inspired locals to consider forming a local sailing club.

THE success of Courtmacsherry’s Community Shop has inspired locals to consider forming a local sailing club.

Cllr Paul Hayes (SF) confirmed that the idea was ‘floated’ at a public meeting in the community centre last Friday, where a presentation was made outlining the plans.

He said: ‘Sailing was always a popular pursuit in Courtmac, but when the owner of the former sailing school retired a couple of years ago, it left a huge void in the village.’

The councillor said local people ae now giving serious consideration to the ‘not-for-profit’ idea.

The meeting heard about the type of equipment and boats being suggested. ‘We were overwhelmed with the offers of help and equipment,’ said Cllr Hayes. ‘We were delighted to get pledges of financial support on the night from various sources including the local Community Shop and Courtmacsherry Development Association. One of the attendees at the meeting represented Kinsale Outdoor Education Centre, who have offered some invaluable help to get us off the ground, with pledges of sailing instructors, loans of equipment and more.’

A dedicated Facebook page has been set up and the committee elected on the night comprises chairman Sean Pedersen; vice-chair Cath Russell; secretary Paul Hayes; asst secretary Mary Lucy; treasurers Billy Adams and Tadgh Fitzgibbon. Enquiries can  be made by emailing [email protected].

The committee is now hoping to apply to Cork County Council, Leader and the EU Flag fund for assistance.
