THE long-awaited gym at Dunmanway Swimming Pool – which had been due to open at the start of this year ¬¬– is to finally open within the next month.

At a meeting of the Municipal District of West Cork this week, held at the pool, Cllr Paul Hayes (SF) sought a progress report on the gym, which will complete the €5.5m facility that opened in 2017 and includes a 25m swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, steam room and sauna.

Council official Mac Dara O h-Ici told councillors that the equipment has been installed and they are currently organising staff but he didn’t have an opening date yet.

‘We’re hoping in the next three to four weeks that the door will open,’ he said.

Cllr Declan Hurley (Ind) said it was very frustrating trying to get information on the gym.

‘While I welcome the timeline we hope it doesn’t come with a health warning. The community in Dunmanway are ready and waiting to use this facility and especially with the winter setting in, they are looking at joining gyms so it would be ideal if this was available soon,’ said Cllr Hurley. Cllr Karen Coakley (FG) said the gym looks fantastic and that the machines are ready to go.
