A GROUP of runners from the Bere Island Parkrun recently swapped their regular Saturday morning run around the eastern end of Bere Island, for a run around Bushy Park in south-west London.

The group from Beara, along with a contingent from Tralee Parkrun, had travelled to London at the invitation of Parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt, to run at Bushy Park, the home of the organisation.

Islander John Walsh said: ‘We received a fantastic reception – everyone went out of their way to welcome all of us who travelled from Cork and Kerry and we were joined by some London based Bere Islanders.’

The Bere Island parkrun launched in August 2013, and has now become a regular fixture of island life with a core group of runners meeting up at the starting line every Saturday morning come rain or shine.

Paul Sinton-Hewitt himself visited the island to take part, along with Irish Olympian Sonia O’Sullivan.

Parkruns are 5k running events, which take place every week.

They are free, although participants are encouraged to register online in order to obtain a bar code, which is scanned at the beginning and end of their run, allowing them to track their progress on a weekly basis.

The Bere Island Parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9.30am, for further information see: www.parkrun.ie/bereisland
