SIR – After attending an amazingly informative meeting hosted by some incredibly passionate residents from the West Cork area in the West Cork Hotel last (Thursday) evening, I was and am thoroughly dismayed and disgusted to hear all about the abhorrent proposed plastics factory development that is being planned to be built very close to the beautiful town of Skibbereen.

How the idea of it ever got off the ground in the first place is totally unbelievable.

The meeting highlighted how ridiculous and ludicrous this scheme is, from the destruction of our fragile infrastructure, i.e. roads, rivers, water courses, sea life, but to the noxious toxins that will spew out from the 4 x 17-metre chimneys that affects everyone and everything, not only in Skibb but Drimoleague, Dunmanway, Rosscarbery, Clonakilty and beyond.

Please, I implore all of the residents in our stunning location to go on to the website, www.saveourskibbereen.ie and read the comprehensive and compelling information on the production of the nurdles, 5mm plastic pellets, that will be produced and how few jobs will be created, not to mention that Ireland will not benefit financially in any way by this scheme.

I have already heard of one potential house buyer that has been put off from moving here because of this.

This cannot be right and just.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Cheryl Leek,

Ballydehob.
