A HOMELESS man who saved two men from a fire was given a three-months suspended prison sentence for stealing drinks worth €10 from a Clonakilty supermarket.

Edgars Valiukevicius, currently living in a tent in Bandon, took three bottles from Scally’s SuperValu at Fax Bridge, Clonakilty District Court heard.

Defence solicitor Flor Murphy said his client was starting residential treatment at Cuan Mhuire to deal with his alcohol addiction next Tuesday (October 28th).

‘He saved two men’s lives last year by pulling them out of a fire. He has burns on his hands as a result,’ he said.

Judge Joanne Carroll said the defendant had been given every chance and had the assistance of the probation services.

She sentenced him to three months in prison but suspended it for three months, on condition he cooperates with the probation services and gets treatment for his alcohol addiction.
