BEST-selling Irish author Deirdre Purcell, a regular visitor to West Cork, is having huge success with her latest novel, The Husband.

The novel, based in both Chicago and Ireland, has recently reached No 3 on the original fiction list.

It tells the story of Marian Lescher’s predictable Chicago life being upended when she is unexpectedly swept into a love affair with Irishman Daniel Lynch. Lynch is a star medic renowned for his charismatic personality. Soon she has divorced her husband and, in the throes of newfound passion, finds herself quickly remarried to this extraordinary man.‘Her new husband has unlocked something in Marian and she feels high on life as never before, even when a darker side to his nature begins to reveal itself.

Although Deirdre Purcell was born and brought up in Dublin, she still has a home in Beara. Deirdre’s connection with Beara goes a long way back – 26 years in fact.

She and her husband, Kevin Healy, bought the shell of a little house in Kilcatherine, four miles by road, a half-mile as the crow flies, across Coulagh Bay, to the village of Eyeries.

They still get there as often as they can and love to show off the area to anyone, friends, family, colleagues. Beara, as those who know it will confirm, find magic there. ‘The very rocks speak of mysticism, antiquity and permanence,’ she says. Deirdre adores it and says she ‘finds peace there’.
