A BANTRY man has appeared in court in connection with a major drugs seizure in the town.

The court presenter at Bantry District Court, Sgt Trish O'Sullivan, said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has yet to give a direction about how this case will proceed.

The accused Ronan O'Sullivan (45) of 4 Slip Heights has been remanded on continuing bail to appear at the June 25th sitting at which the DPP direction will be given.

Two charges have been brought against the accused: one of possession of suspected cocaine at his home on March 3rd last; and one of possession of suspected cocaine for sale or supply.

Sgt Trish O'Sullivan told the court that the substance that was seized by Gda Andrew Manning at the accused's home has yet to be analysed.

The accused was granted bail on the condition that he continue to reside at 4, Slip Heights and sign-on at Bantry Garda Stationevery Monday and Friday between 9am and 8pm.

Judge Joanne Carroll instructed the accused to keep his mobile phone on, and charged, so he can be contactable at all times by gardaí. And she ordered him to surrender his passport.

In addition, Ronan O'Sullivan is to abide by a curfew between the houses of 10pm and 6am; have no association with drugs; and commit no offence.

When the case was called last Thursday at the district court, the court presenter said the DPP had directed that charges, relating to two entirely separate events, are to proceed in the district court.

One of these incidents relates to a search at the accused's home on April 4th 2023, and a prosecution by Gda Shannon Ryan for simple possession of cocaine; and possession of cocaine for the purpose of sale or supply.

Gda Shannon Ryan was also involved in a search at Ronan O'Sullivan's home on November 5th 2024 and filing charges for simple possession of cocaine; and possession of cocaine for sale or supply.

Colette McCarthy, solicitor, made an application to Judge Carroll for free legal aid stating that her client is in receipt of social welfare and social housing. Judge Carroll granted her application.
