THE Castletownshend Marine festival takes next week in the picturesque West Cork coastal village, in aid of the Castlehaven Community Council Project.

Events will kick off on Sunday night with a talk by award-winning author Martina Devlin at Mary Ann’s Warren Gallery.

Tyrone native Martina is currently researching a book on Somerville & Ross, authors of The Irish RM, and will speak on the topic and some of the stories she has unearthed.

Other festival highlights include an under-8s football blitz, a rosary at the new cemetery, a kids’ fun morning and art competition on Friday August 3rd at the playground, a magic show at Drishane gates at 7pm on that the same night.

There will, of course, but the annual maritime parade, between 8pm and 10pm on Friday night, featuring St Fachtna’s Silver Band and a children’s fancy dress with music at the castle, all sponsored by Carbery Oil. There will also be a trad session in Lil’s Bar from 10pm on Friday and a guided walk on Saturday afternoon to the Five Fingers, starting at Cross Street in the village at 4pm.

A special maritime service will take place in St Barrahane’s Church on Sunday at 9.30am with a mass at Castlehaven Church at 1.30pm.
