Clonakilty captain reflects on huge win for West Cork club as senior football status is secured

CLONAKILTY captain Donal Lyons was deeply appreciative of the role played by the club in the Cork SFC relegation final victory (3-13 to 0-9) over Aghada in Brinny on Sunday, especially the huge turn-around since the Nicks’ game.

‘You have to hand it to the management and, especially, the club, for the way they got behind the team since the Nick’s game. They were unbelievably supportive,’ Lyons said.

‘Whatever we wanted in training it was given. They were extremely positive and supportive all through. I think that, more than anything else, got us over the line (on Sunday).

‘The supporters were amazing (on Sunday) too. It was like a county semi-final out there. An awful lot of people from outside the club sent texts and good wishes, that was nice to see. I’m glad we were able to respond. Yes, I’m certainly a relieved man now but happy.’
