2016 West Cork Youth Sports Star is in a class of his own

DARRAGH McElhinney showed his star quality once more with a stunning win at the SIAB International Schools’ Cross-Country event in Margram Park, Port Talbot, Wales last Sunday.

The Glengarriff teenager defeated the best UK athletes in his age group and had 100 metres to spare at the finish line, further highlighting his class that has him marked out as one to watch.

The current West Cork Youth Sports Star made his move midway through this 6,250m race and his rivals had no answer to him.

Darragh won in 19:05, 14 seconds clear of England’s Lachlan Wellington in second place.

This latest success is a big boost to the Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí student as he heads into the track season next month.

He’ll use this week for recovery before starting to build towards the track season, and those preparations will include a nine-day training camp in Portugal at Easter.

Niall Bruton of Under Armour has come on board to support Darragh with gear, and local businessman Finbarr O’Shea of Glenview Heating is also supporting this talented West Cork athlete who is destined for big things.
