SIR – In the last two issues, we have read two missionary statements on the continuing Israel-Gaza situation, both from well outside the area and neither justifying its position. One contributor, indeed, styled himself ‘Captain’. Why, oh why, must such people not establish the facts that I, for one, would benefit from knowing?
The stated League of Nations (UN) position, the Balfour Declaration, was that a Jewish homeland could be created as long as the peoples of the region agreed. Whilst not always totally reliable, histories suggest that this condition may not have been complied with, and the record of violence since then would be unusual if it had.
Relevant documentation, if it exists, must be available, if only because there are plenty of us who can claim that the whole process has taken place within our own lifetimes.
Depending on the TRUE position, it will easily be possible to decide who is the guilty party.
