AN Post’s powers of deduction in West Cork were put to the test once again last week.

The savvy staff in the postal service in this part of the world have been given some challenges in recent years, with bizarre and very scant addresses, but they always seem to locate the right destination in the end.

And it was no different last week when a letter, bound for the granny of our Olympic heroes, Gary and Paul O’Donovan, arrived into the local post office.

The handwritten letter was addressed – erroneously – to a ‘Mary O’Donovan’, although underneath it was marked: ‘Silver Medals Grandmother’, with an address that simply said: ‘Skibereen (sic), Co Cork’, adding a lovely ‘Well Done All’ as the last line.

Of course, the O’Donovan’s grandmother’s name is Mary Doab and she lives in Ballincollig.

Her daughter, Trish, the boys’ mum, sent a photo of the envelope to The Southern Star, saying: ‘Look what was delivered to Lisheen today … Well done to An Post.’

Well done all, indeed!
