Our lifestyle editor went for a drive from Skibbereen through Castlehaven and back last Saturday morning (Feb 13th). He recorded the trip, and set it to music – a perfect taste of a typical West Cork morning in February for anyone living abroad and missing home!

Southern Star lifestyle editor Niall O'Driscoll drove one of his favourite local routes on Saturday morning last and as an experiment he recorded the trip using a dashboard-mounted video camera.

The video gives a realistic sense of the light and weather on the morning, not to mention the colours of the countryside, as it follows a route which is part of the Wild Atlantic Way, starting on the Trag Road in Skibbereen, traveling the main road past Liss Ard Estate, through Lake Cross and on past Castlehaven National School before turning right at the top of Castletownshend and heading over the coast road past Sandycove, Toe Head, Yokane and into Tragumna, before heading for home again.

The journey, which takes between 20-30 minutes in real time, has been sped up for the purposes of the video and now you can view this whistle-stop trip in just under four minutes – a perfect bitesize taste of a typical West Cork morning in February.

See if you can spot where he paused for a moment to look at a ship on the horizon!
