A NEW company employing up to 50 people could be on the cards for Skibbereen in 2016.
A Cork County Council source confirmed that the IDA has asked the Council to amend the Local Area Plan to facilitate the development of a new factory at Poundlick in Skibbereen.
The elected members of the Municipal District of West Cork – the only ones with the power to change the development plan – will be asked to vote on the proposed amendment early in the New Year.
It is believed, but it has not yet been confirmed, that an American plastics company – with the potential to create up to 50 new jobs in the town if the proposal goes ahead – is interested in setting up a factory at Poundlick.
Skibbereen-based Cllr Joe Carroll (FF) welcomed the news saying: ‘This development, combined with the success of Ludgate project in Townshend Street, could mean a whole new beginning for Skibbereen.’
Mr Carroll said: ‘It is my understanding that the proposal to rezone the land at Poundlick will be put before the Municipal District meeting on Monday, January 4th next and I, for one, will be supporting the proposal to allow the company develop this site.’
