FIONA Meade, Ireland’s elite women’s national road race champion is heading for West Cork to help Breakthrough Cancer Research’s Jagged Edge Tour – with elements of both ‘Pain’ and ‘Pleasure’.

This one day event – to take place on Saturday April 11 – consists of three different routes all starting in Crosshaven. A 130k cycle route hugs the coast, taking in Myrtleville, Fountainstown, Robertscove, Oysterhaven, Kinsale and more, dubbed the ‘Pain’ route. This challenging cycle is geared towards the more experienced club cyclist.

Organiser Niall Kennedy from Breakthrough Cancer Research said they had also created a 65k route, following the same direction, but cutting out most of the difficult climbing. ‘This route is designed for the leisure cyclist, and is called the ‘Pleasure’ tour,’ he said.

There will also be a ‘Family Fun Cycle’ from Crosshaven to Carrigaline and back, which will be suitable for all ages.

Helping launch the Jagged Edge Tour, Fiona Meade, Ireland’s elite women’s national road race champion said the Jagged Edge tour was a fantastic idea.

‘Not only are we lending our support to a great cause in cancer research, but this great event offers routes for people at varying levels in their cycling, along with offering a family friendly cycle also.’

Mr Kennedy said the event would not be possible without the support of the Crosshaven Community Association and main Sponsors ESI Technologies Ltd.
