THE long-awaited gym at Dunmanway Swimming Pool is set to open in the New Year, which will complete the €5.5m facility which opened last year,
At a meeting of the Municipal District of West Cork this week, councillors were told by officials that the tender for the equipment has gone out and that it is expected to open in January.
Council official Mac Dara O h-Ici said that it will be a ‘pay as you go’ facility, but they would also look at the possibility of monthly memberships.
Speaking after the meeting, Dunmanway’s Cllr Declan Hurley welcomed the news.
‘The new Dunmanway swimming pool has proven to be a fabulous facility for the town and now with the new gym facility added, it offers a lot more potential to Dunmanway and surrounding areas,’ said Cllr Hurley.
‘The gym was originally planned to be part of the opening of the new swimming pool, but due to a shortfall in funding it meant that the purchase of equipment and fit-out of the gym had to be put on hold. Funding was then sought through the Capital Sports Grant programme and €115,000 was secured back in December of last year for the fit-out.’
The opening of the gym will complete the facility which also includes a 25m pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a toddlers’ pool, a steam room and sauna.
The pool facilitates visiting groups and schools and also a variety of activities including adult and children’s swimming lessons, aqua aerobics and pool birthday parties, along with swimming galas and intensive lane and triathlon training.
