KINSALE & District Lions Club brought festive cheer to young patients at Cork hospitals with its annual toy drop.
The charity event at CUH on December 12th saw overwhelming public support as volunteers collected board games, teddies, books, clothes, cosmetics and toiletries for young patients.
The drop, organised in partnership with Cork University Hospital Charity and backed by MMD Construction, drew high-profile attendees including Taoiseach Micheál Martin and several Cork GAA inter-county stars, among them Mark Cronin, Micheál Aodh Martin, Aoife O’Neill, Laura O’Mahony and Saoirse McCarthy.

Santa and his helpers distributed the toys at the hospital, supported by Defence Forces personnel, emergency service crews and the Army Band.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin praised the community effort as a powerful example of solidarity, saying: ‘The generosity shown by Kinsale Lions Club, CUH Charity, MMD Construction, our emergency services, Cork GAA players, and the wider public reflects the very best of Cork. Bringing joy to young patients at Christmas is a wonderful reminder of the kindness that defines our community.’
Cormac Fitzgerald, President of Kinsale & District Lions Club, said the initiative ensured every child in hospital experienced the warmth and magic of Christmas.
He said: ‘The response has been phenomenal. We’re deeply grateful for the generosity of the public and our corporate supporters. Special thanks must go to the Defence Forces and the Army Band, whose enthusiasm helped make the day truly unforgettable.’
All donated toys were formally handed over to CUH Charity, with volunteers and emergency service personnel coordinating distribution across Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital, South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital and a number of local charities.
Claire Concannon of CUH Charity described the toy drop as one of Cork’s most beloved charity appeals, saying: ‘The support this initiative receives is immense, and this year was no different. The backing of the entire community makes it such a success, with the core aim of lifting the spirits of those children who will spend time in hospital over Christmas.’
