SIR – I have just returned from Doire from the funeral of one of Sinn Féin’s greatest leaders of all time – a freedom fighter, Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, a fly fisherman and a skilled negotiator, who had reached a place to ensure there would be no reversion back to the old days of violence.

He won the trust of all in opposition and even the friendship  of Ian Paisley and Peter Robinson and is great testimony to his greatness and personal integrity it was great to see so many dignatories at his funeral, including Arlene Foster and Bill Clinton and ministers from the south, and Michelle O’Neill, Mary Lou and the dynamic Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams.

To his wife Bernie and family, our deepest condolences from all in Kinsale where he touched the hearts of so many at the Friary Centre when he spoke out honestly of growing up during the troubles in the Creggan and Bogside. May this great man rest with Bobby Sands and the rest of our hunger strikers in the land of the Fenians.

Regards,

Noel Harrington,

Scilly,

Kinsale.
