SIR – As founder of the West Cork Philosophical Society, I would like to add my voice to those denouncing the statements made by the President of the United States in the wake of the events at Charlottesville last week.

It is chilling for all of us to see images of people openly brandishing Nazi flags and using KKK symbolism on the streets of America.

One would have hoped that by 2017 the world would have moved beyond such egregious displays of racial hatred but sadly that is not the case.

There is no morally justifiable argument for making a comparison between those who support and defend a philosophy that led directly to the death of millions of innocent people in concentration camps around Europe, and those who protest against such beliefs.

America helped us defeat the first wave of Fascism when it swept across Europe in the 1900s, now it seems that they have to defeat the Fascism that is making its ominous presence felt on their own doorstep.

I stand with those who oppose Fascism in any of its many guises.

Yours Sincerely,

Anne Crossey,

Skibbereen.
