New director general covers a wide range of issues

THE annual dinner-dance of West Cork IFA took place in the Parkway Hotel, Dunmanway.

West Cork IFA chairman Corney Buckley welcomed the large attendance who experienced a thoroughly enjoyable night. The special guest was the director general of the IFA, Damian McDonald, who was visiting West Cork for the first time since he took up the position with the Association early last year.

In an address which greatly impressed his audience, most of whom were hearing him for the first time, he covered a wide range of issues facing farmers at the present time. Of these, the most immediate and terrifying threat is posed by the great imponderable of Brexit, where it is impossible for anyone to predict what the final outcome will be.

He went on to speak on the IFA campaign to increase the CAP budget. Current proposals would see a reduction in the proportion of the EU budget spent on agriculture from over 50% in the early 90’s to less than 30% in the coming years. He also spoke on the threats posed by issues such as climate change, vulture funds and rural crime.

Chairman Corney Buckley thanked all who helped to make the night a success. He expressed a special word of thanks to AIB for their generous sponsorship.

The other sponsors were Carbery Milk Products, Drinagh Co-Op, Lisavaird Co-Op, Dairygold, Pat Connolly Insurances, Biggs Oil, West Cork Oil, South of Ireland Petroleum, McLaughlin’s of Bandon, Stock Health Bandon, FDC Accountants, FBD Insurance, Owen O’Driscoll Consultants, Pat Healy Tractors, Pat Tobin Plant Hire, Ken Anderson Tyres and Barrett Agri.

Having enjoyed a superb meal, the many patrons danced into the early hours to the music of Martin Kearney and Teddy Crowley.
