GARDAI are examining CCTV footage in the area of a Skibbereen primary school in a bid to identify a man who caused two young girls to become fearful when he approached them.

The girls were making their way to St Joseph’s NS on Monday morning when a man tried to entice them towards him.

Supt Ger O’Mahony confirmed they had been informed of the incident and were looking into all aspects of it.

He said:  ‘The girls were taking a different route than normal to the school when they met a man and became afraid. We are satisfied that no physical contact took place but they did the right thing to alert an adult to the situation.’

The Supt said he did not want to generate unnecessary fear but said the right thing to do in such a situation was to notify the gardaí.

‘If people have any concerns, the gardai want to hear them. We take all such reports seriously.’

There was no comment available from St Joseph’s NS. However, principal Cáit Uí Raghallaigh distributed a note to parents on Tuesday, urging them to report any concerns to the school or Skibbereen Gardai.
