CAHERAGH Folk Group is preparing for a special festive concert to celebrate its 20th anniversary, having long struck a chord with the local community.
For many years, the group has regularly filled the church in Caheragh with warm harmonies and memorable performances. And for A Magical Evening of Carols by Candlelight on December 12th, the singers and musicians will join two other choirs from the area, Muintir Bhaire Men’s’ Choir and Sheep’s Head Women’s’ Chorus.
Karen Keohane, who is the group’s musical director and works as a carer, said: ‘We are looking forward to a very special night. It is our first time performing together with the other two choirs. We are nearly ready for the big night.’
For their anniversary concert, the ensemble has intensified rehearsals to three times a week, putting together a mix of musical theatre, film, folk and classical tunes. Featuring guitar, piano, fiddle, flute, and voices, their sound is well-known in Caheragh’s musical scene and beyond. Founded by Rev Fr Michael O’Donovan in 2005, the 16-member group brings together diverse singers united by their passion for music, with Norman Collins leading on piano and guitar. And they have even gained national attention, appearing on RTÉ during the Mass for Holy Thursday and Last Supper Mass.
Caheragh Folk Group also takes part in charity fundraisers, having raised €4,500 for St John’s Ward in 2010. A number of children from local schools will perform four choral pieces at the Christmas concert this week. The anniversary performance will be on Friday, December 12th at Holy Family Church in Caheragh, starting at 7.30pm with doors opening at 7pm. Contact Bernadette Murnane on 086 8384815 for tickets. A raffle will be held on the night. Proceeds of the concert will go to local parish schools and West Cork Palliative Care.
