A MAN who crashed his car into a wall in Union Hall while drunk has been disqualified from driving for three years.

Nigel Elward (60), of Ballinatona, Union Hall, pleaded guilty at Skibbereen District Court to drink driving and to two public order charges.

The court heard that just before midnight on November 8th last gardaí attended the scene of an accident at Clontaff, Union Hall, where a white Skoda was lying sideways across the road.

Sgt Tom Mulcahy said the car appeared to have collided with the wall of a house.

Gardaí spoke with the accused, who was sitting in the driver seat and admitted to having drank earlier that night.

He was arrested and while en route to Bandon Garda station behaved in an abusive manner.

At the station, he said to another person in custody: ‘What the f*** are you looking at?’

He provided gardaí with two alcohol tests, with a result over the legal limit showing 77mgs of alcohol in 100 mls of breath.

The court heard that Mr Elward had no previous convictions.

‘He can give no excuse at all. This is not the way he behaves and he is very apologetic,’ defence solicitor Colette McCarthy said, adding that her client had struck his head in the collision.

Judge Joanne Carroll disqualified him for three years on the drink driving charge and struck out the public order offences, requesting him to pay €250 to the Court Poor Box.

Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme.
