THE Re-turn Awards were officially launched by broadcaster, author, former Irish rugby international player, and dad-of-four, Donncha O’Callaghan. The aim of these new awards is to recognise the creativity, commitment and community spirit shown by students, colleges, schools and teachers in embracing Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme, whether through fundraising initiatives, sustainability projects, or innovative recycling campaigns. The ceremony, celebrating the finalists, will take place on Wednesday June 3rd at Croke Park.
Since the launch of the Deposit Return Scheme in 2024, schools have played a key role in helping communities recycle the right way, with many schools using the scheme to help raise funds for activities within their school as well as learn more about protecting the environment.
To date, over 700 primary schools and over 250 colleges and universities nationwide, have signed up to be part of Re-turn’s Community initiatives and Re-turn is now encouraging even more schools and student groups in Cork to get involved.

There are 15 prizes of €1,000 for schools up for grabs and one lucky school will be named National Champion receiving €5,000 for their school. The deadline for entries is Monday April 27th. The awards are open to all primary schools in the Republic of Ireland, with judging taking school size into account.
Big ideas matter! It is not just about how many plastic bottles or cans are returned, it is about the difference they make.
The judging panel will be looking for a broad range of inspiring stories that demonstrate creativity and fresh thinking, problem-solving, strong community spirit, positive fundraising impact, broad participation from students, parents and staff, and meaningful learning woven into the curriculum.
Calling for entries Donncha O’Callaghan said: ‘I’m delighted to be part of the inaugural Re-turn Awards celebrating the incredible work happening in primary schools and on third-level campuses right across Ireland. Since the beginning of the Deposit Return Scheme, we’ve seen young people really embrace the opportunity to make a difference, raising funds for their schools, clubs and charities while protecting the environment at the same time.
The Re-turn Awards are about recognising creativity, teamwork and community spirit. It’s not just about how many bottles or cans are returned, it’s about the impact those returns can have. I would encourage every primary school and third level student group to get involved, share your story to be in with a chance to win some great prizes.’
