DEBARRAS was once again the overall winner of this year’s Clonakilty Window Box and Hanging Basket awards. The awards also celebrated 30 years of unbroken sponsorship of the competition by local firm, Collins, Brooks & Associates.

At the prize giving night, hosted by the Municipal District of West Cork, some of the prize winners from the inaugural ceremony in 1985 were in attendance, along with other winners who, down through the years, have graced the town with their magnificent floral displays.

Jim Brooks and Roni Collins presented the awards and once again Bobby and Eileen Blackwell of DeBarra’s won Best Overall prize for their floral treats and they received the Liam and Betty Collins Rose Bowl from Elizabeth O’Sullivan, representing the Collins family.

Jim Brooks recalled the late Liam Collins’s huge pride and interest in the town. Former town Mayor, Colette Twomey praised all the participants, organisers and especially the sponsors for their loyal generosity down the years.

Patrick and Teresa Lordan of the Parish Field won the prize for Residential, while Clonakilty Credit Union won the Commercial prize.

Clonakilty Townhouse Hotel took the prize for Hotel & Guesthouse category.

In launching the 2015 competition, Mr Brooks pledged the firm’s support into the future.

Eileen Kingston, a member of the organisating committee, acknowledged the sterling work of the Tidy Towns committee and the huge efforts of town foreman, Seamus Daly, as well as Joanna Brown and her team.

She also thanked Municipal District Officer, Justin England, for his ongoing commitment and encouragement.

‘With official tourist season upon us, let’s hope that once again Clonakilty will say, ‘Welcome with flowers’, said Eileen.
