THERE was much shock and sadness in Coppeen this week when prominent businessman John Barrett died on Sunday in Cork University Hospital following an illness.

John, who was in his late 40s was managing director of Barrett Agri, the well-known family business that deals in fuel and farm supplies. He was well known and popular throughout West Cork.

John joined the family business in 1988 following his secondary education at Rockwell College in Co. Tipperary. They then made the decision to establish

Barrett Agri in 2008 due to the increased demand in the sector and to give the business a specific identity. Despite the change John always made sure the business kept the friendly, personal service which no doubt many of their customers can attest to.

John was the son of the late Ned Barrett, who died in February  2016 and was a former publican and businessman whose family have been in business since 1921.
