BISHOP Eamon Casey has died at the age of 89 at a nursing home in Co Clare.

The former Bishop of Galway resigned after it emerged, in 1992, that he had fathered a child, Peter, with American woman Annie Murphy.

He fled to South America but returned to Ireland in recent years.

‘I regret that in the past I let a number of people down. It caused great hurt to some and for that I am deeply regretful and sad,’ he told reporters when he returned.

In recent years he suffered from dementia and lived his last days at the Newmarket-on-Fergus nursing home.
