THE Dave Fenton Charity Cycle in aid of Castletownbere RNLI Lifeboat and Castletownbere GAA takes place on Saturday June 20th.
This community-driven event offers either a 100km or 40km route on the roads of the Beara Peninsula with a focus on participation and supporting two key local organisations. The cycle starts from 9am at Castletownbere GAA, Droum.
A proud Kerry native, Dave became deeply woven into community life in Castletownbere. He served with RNLI Castletownbere as deputy coxswain and deputy mechanic, taking part in many rescues and featured regularly on BBC’s Saving Lives at Sea and receiving two Water Safety Ireland awards.

During his time with Castletownbere lifeboat, ten lives were saved in a number of rescues. He also played with Castletownbere GAA, contributed to the club both on and off the field, and was part of the team that won the 2012 Cork Intermediate Football Championship.
‘The charity cycle is about more than the challenge of the road,’ said a spokesperson for the organising committee. ‘It is intended as a community-driven event that brings cyclists of all levels together for a memorable day of participation, scenery and local spirit. Every euro raised will go directly to the two beneficiary organisations.
‘The RNLI station continues to provide a vital volunteer search and rescue service off the Beara Peninsula, while Castletownbere GAA remains a central part of parish life, supporting players, families and the wider community.’
The day will conclude with a BBQ and live music with Pat Higgins in Castletownbere Square.
Registration, payment and donation details are available on the event website below, and organisers are also inviting volunteers to help on the day.
