Cork Airport has recorded its wettest January in 10 years.

According to a report issued by Met Éireann, Cork Airport received 200.5mm of rainfall across the month of January, 153% more than the long-term average.

Rainfall was up across Ireland. The month’s wettest day was reported in Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford, with 37.3mm recorded on January 30th.

According to the national forecaster, high pressure in northern and eastern Europe led to prolonged spells of heavy rain, which resulted in the significant flooding seen during Storm Chandra.

January 2026 also marks the coldest January since 2021. Mean temperatures at Sherkin Island weather station were marked at 6.9 °C, almost 1 degree colder than the average for this time of year.

The report did not issue all bad news. Cork Airport saw the highest monthly total of daily sunshine hours in the country. The weather station measured 75 hours at the airport, compared with the lowest figures of 47.8 hours at Malin Head, Co. Donegal.
