Cork has ranked ninth in new data to look at Ireland's most stream-obsessed counties.
Virgin Media Ireland, has analysed Google Search data from the past 12 months, which shows that Cork ranks ninth with 726 streaming related searches per 100,000 people. This shows that residents are embracing streaming as a key way to stay entertained, whether they’re catching the latest TV hit like Stranger Things, rewatching a classic movie, or tuning into streaming games.
The top streaming counties are Dublin, followed by Leitrim, Carlow, Louth and Longford.
Dublin takes the crown as the country’s most streaming-obsessed county. Popular shows like 'Normal People' and 'Bad Sisters' have put Dublin on the global screen, while films such as 'Once,' which won an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2008, highlight the city’s cinematic appeal.
Leitrim ranks second with 910 searches per 100,000 people. Despite its smaller population, residents clearly love cosying up on the couch and keeping up with the world’s most popular shows. Leitrim has also appeared on screen in recent years, with the 2024 film That They May Face the Rising Sun, bringing the work of local writer John McGahern and the county’s scenery to life.
Carlow, often called the 'Celtic Centre of Ireland' comes third with 872 searches per 100,000 people. Louth and Longford round out the top five. Louth recorded 809 searches per 100,000 people and has hosted movies like The Devil’s Own, starring Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt. Longford follows closely with 749 searches per 100,000 people, and has also featured on screen, with GAA drama Lakelands filmed in the county, providing a strong backdrop for filmmakers.
Moving into the top ten, County Cork ranks ninth with 726 searches per 100,000 people. It has also played a starring role on screen, with TV shows such as The Young Offenders and films like Ondine, starring Colin Farrell, filmed there.
