A YOUNG woman who seemed to be acting suspiciously in a car that had been stopped by gardaí at a routine checkpoint in Bantry avoided a conviction for cocaine possession.

Elizabeth Keenan (21) of 72, Rahoonane, Tralee, Kerry, was legally represented at Bantry District Court by Colette McCarthy, solicitor.

Ms McCarthy said her client admitted having a tiny amount of cocaine for her own personal use.

The solicitor said her client is not a habitual cocaine user but had, shortly before being stopped at 11pm at Glanycarney, on March 15th last, to deal with a difficult family situation.

She said her client has no previous convictions and is unlikely to ever offend again.

In view of her unblemished record, Judge Joanne Carroll struck out the charge after the accused made a €50 donation to the court poor box.

Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme.
