A NUMBER of West Cork biodiversity projects are to receive funding under the latest scheme to support research, surveys, and action on invasive species and habitat management.

Minister of State Christopher O’Sullivan announced €3 million for local authorities for 2026 under the scheme, managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

An amphibian habitat project at Gallanes Lough, Clonakilty is to receive €5,865 to support freshwater ponds, a refuge habitat for Smooth Newt which was created in 2024 near a newly-built greenway.

A sum of €1,275 has also been awarded for the establishment of effective guidance and control protocols for invasive freshwater turtles of EU concern across Cork county, along with €1,228.28 across the county for a project recording Irish mayfly.

Minister O’Sullivan said: ‘Previous grants have funded surveys of rare birds and plants, restoration measures in key habitats like wetlands, grasslands and rivers. I’m excited to see what this year’s fund will support.’

Over €13 million has been granted to local authorities for their biodiversity work since the fund was set up in 2018, with 262 projects benefitting in 2025. Closing date for applications is February 5th 2026.
