TWO Lithuanian men in their 40s were questioned by Revenue officers last Sunday morning in Castletownbere over the seizure of 7,000 smuggled cigarettes. The intelligence-led operation led to officers conducting searches under a court warrant of two houses in the town.
Detective dog Harvey assisted in the searches, which resulted in the seizure of the 7,000 smuggled cigarettes, branded ‘NZ’, and a car. A prosecution file is now being prepared.
A spokesperson for the Revenue said that the evasion of tax and duty is illegal and can have serious and costly consequences for those involved.
Anyone who knows someone who is involved in evading tax or smuggling should report it on the Revenue’s Confidential Freephone on 1800 295295, they added.
