A €2M project to improve Clonakilty’s infrastructure will result in the loss of 12 car parking spaces in the town centre.

However, Justin England, Municipal Officer, told members of West Cork’s Municipal District that 13 new public car parking spaces will be created in the grounds of Clonakilty Community College.

Cllr Noel O’Donovan (pictured) said he was aware that the business community were, on one level, ‘suffering’ during the construction of a new underground drainage and ducting system. But he said the mood in the town was positive.

The chairman, Cllr Christopher O’Sullivan (FF) said: ‘Everyone knows there is going to be a long-term gain.’

Cllr Paul Hayes (SF) welcomed the placement of new billboards on the approach road to town, which showed how streamlined and modern the centre of the town would look when the work is done.

He also commented on how quickly and efficiently the work is being carried out. ‘Everyone can see that it has been going well so far.’

However, he called on the gardai to assist more with traffic diversions when there are big funerals taking place in the town.
