A PLUMBER who drove his grandmother’s car without insurance was fined €175 at Clonakilty District Court.
Gardai stopped Ryan Kelly (20), of Ardea, Ballincarriga, Dunmanway, driving a white Kia on the R586 off Nedinagh, East Dunmanway on April 23rd.
He had a full licence, but was not a registered driver of the vehicle and insurance on the car had expired in June 2024. Gardaí seized the car on the spot.

The court heard that the defendant had insurance on another vehicle and no previous convictions.
Defence solicitor Conrad Murphy said: ‘The car he was driving was his grandmother’s car and he had his own car, which had insurance at the time. He believed that he was covered to drive his grandmother’s car.’
The court heard that Mr Kelly’s grandmother had had a stroke and he was selling the car on her behalf.
Judge Joanne Carroll said: ‘It’s hard to understand that he believed that he could be driving other vehicles with the insurance policy for his own vehicle.’
She issued a €175 fine for driving without insurance.
