WEST Cork’s history societies continue to thrive under the banner of the West Cork History Societies Association, uniting to tell the story of this large and diverse region.

At their most recent gathering, held in the community centre in Drimoleague, representatives from the various societies were joined by Cork County Council’s Heritage Officer, Conor Nelligan.

Conor praised the initiative, describing it as an important effort in promoting history and heritage, and outlined the financial supports available from the local authority and the Heritage
Council.

Formed just over two years ago, the group has already hosted several notable events, including a recent conference on emigration held at the Kilmurray Independence Museum
in April.

The association, whose membership stretches from Muskerry to Castletownbere, also collates the monthly activities of its member societies on its website, www.westcorkhistory.ie.

During Saturday’s meeting, discussion focused on ways to encourage greater public attendance at lectures, with a general agreement that posters still play an important role in advertising.

Another key topic was the sharing of information among the societies. A survey will soon be circulated to identify areas where the groups can benefit from one another’s experience
and resources.

The need to attract more young people to the subject was also discussed. It was noted that many students from West Cork are studying history at university — a valuable resource that is not yet being fully utilised.

Both secondary and national schools were also highlighted as important areas for development, with a suggestion that societies should reach out to teachers in these institutions to build stronger connections.
