THE lack of sunlight is causing solar-powered warning signs to go on the blink in the village of Caheragh, according to Fianna Fáil Cllr George Gill.
With the school warning signs not working properly, Cllr Gill said motorists are tearing through the village at speeds he described as ‘fairly frightening’.
The councillor raised the issue at a meeting of the West Cork Municipal District, where he tabled a motion calling on the council to install a driver speed feedback sign on R594 approaching Caheragh village from Aughaville.

He also requested that the existing school warning signs, at the opposite end of the village, be upgraded.
With a long bend on the road coming into The Traveller’s Rest, he suggested pedestrians are at risk.
And he warned it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.
Kevin Lynch, executive engineer, informed the councillor that the Schull area office will review the signage in Caheragh.
‘If driver feedback signs are thought to be of benefit to road safety, the Schull Area Office will look to acquire funding for their purchase and installation,’ he said.
Cllr Finbarr Harrington (Ind) seconded the motion saying the driver speed feedback signs are a good deterrent and are effective in making motorists slow down.
