THE disintegration of the roadway at Ilen Street, Skibbereen, was likened to roads in developing countries that had been ‘washed away.’

Cllr Brendan McCarthy (FG) described the state of the surface of the road from The Southern Star down as far as The West Cork Hotel as ‘awful.’

Not only are there deep grooves in the roadway, the road is at full tilt, making it officially the worst road in Skibbereen, according to Cllr McCarthy.

Some motorists stop in traffic until the oncoming car has gone past. Them they move to the incorrect side of the road to avoid the ruts in the roadway.

Cllr McCarthy said all of the other road surfaces in the town, and the footpaths, have been resurfaced, re-tarred, and re-painted, so the town looks brand spanking new as you drive through it.

Cllr McCarthy said he had been informed that road at Ilen Street, which has recently been covered in loose tar, will not be properly resurfaced until a surface water drainage scheme at Rossa Road, or The Cutting as it is known locally, is finalised.

At a bi-monthly meeting of the Western Division to discuss West Cork’s flood reports, the Fine Gael councillor called on council officials, and the local authority engineers, to have another look at the lopsided and deeply pitted road and give the council members a timeframe for when it will be repaired.
