A €100,000 funding allocation for repair works at Cape Clear harbour will ensure repair and rebuilding works continue on the island’s collapsed southern pier.

The investment under the government’s harbour modernisation programme is part of a €27 million allocation for capital projects in publicly-owned harbours, which also includes €2.6 million small craft harbour on Dinish Island.

‘It is great to see the works continuing to repair and rebuild the southern pier in Cape Clear,’ said Cork South West TD and Minister of State Christopher O’Sullivan.

‘The community needs it operational, and so it is key to keep the pressure on to ensure the pier comes back online as soon as possible.

‘I also very much welcome news that €2.6million has been allocated for the small craft harbour at Dinish Island.

‘This will hopefully free up the main harbour at Castletownbere for a facility to accommodate Bere Islanders with their small craft when they come to the mainland, as well as locals of Castletownbere with their small craft.

‘This is something that will be very much needed for the islanders to improve their access to the mainland.’

The €5.8 million funding announced for Castletownbere under the Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Scheme represents the governments ongoing commitment to the development, modernisation and sustainability of West Cork’s fishery harbours and coastal infrastructure, he said.
