A UNIQUE assortment of properties on Whiddy Island, including Bank House, 226 acres, and the adjoining Rabbit Island, has gone on the market with an asking price of €4 million.

The holding is offered for sale either in its entirety or in separate lots. Lot one includes the main, two-storey detached house, outbuildings, and 187 acres on a prime seafront site.

Another lot includes the popular Bank House bar and restaurant, which also has a four-bedroom apartment.  It is a property that locals and day-trippers, who take the ferry from Bantry to the island, have long enjoyed as a good watering hole and provider of hearty, traditional fayre.

Cotter’s House, at Kilmore on Whiddy has also been listed, while at Gallow’s Hill there is a scenic, single-storey dwelling situated on its own grounds, waiting to be snapped up.

Teacher’s House at Kilmore is a two-storey dwelling set on its own grounds.

Kilmore House with an adjoining one-bedroom apartment has also been listed.

There is another single-storey building called Kelly’s House at Trawnahah that offers direct sea frontage and comes fully furnished.

Amongst the collection of properties, all of which have been listed with Sherry FitzGerald, is an historic freestanding circular-plan battery.

Not quite what one would call ‘new’ to the market, the battery was built in 1804 and includes a military barracks, a magazine, and a cast-iron water pump within its interior.

This site is part of the significant defensive network constructed by the British Government following the 1796 attempted French invasion of Ireland.

Although abandoned in 1807, it remains an imposing structure, offering a striking visual reminder of the strategic importance of this remote location in Ireland’s military history.

In addition to a derelict ruin, potential buyers may be interested in acquiring Rabbit Island, which measures approximately three acres, and is located within easy reach of Whiddy Island.

Despite its complex and at times dramatic history, the selling agents have accurately described Whiddy Island as having ‘retained its quiet dignity and natural grace.’
