THE owners of Saint Francis Provisions in Kinsale have attributed their recent Michelin award success to three words: ‘liking your customers.’

The popular restaurant picked up the Michelin Guide Service Award at the recent Michelin Guide Ceremony for Great Britain and Ireland, which took place at the Convention Centre in Dublin.  In fact, this was the first time the ceremony was held in Dublin since the awards first began in 1974.

In its citation the Guide said Barbara Nealon, owner and general manager of St Francis Provisions personifies Ireland’s famous warm hospitality.

‘She has helped make her restaurant into a jewel of the County Cork dining scene. Her relaxed, personal approach to service puts her guests at ease while ensuring everything runs as efficiently as possible. This is a restaurant where you can feel the love poured into it- the kind of place that puts a smile on your face and has you planning your return.’

When asked onstage at the awards where she and head chef Rebecca Recart-Sanches were presented with their award by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, about what makes great service, Barbara said the key is ‘liking your customers.’

‘Even though my head was spinning and I felt totally in shock, I actually stand by my three word answer!, Barbara said afterwards.

‘Because when I said ‘liking’ what’s at the root of that is love. And love is at the core of our business. This little place is an act of love and in my opinion that makes great service.’

The restaurant also retained their Michelin Bib Gourmand, which recognises restaurants that offer good food at a great price.

There was more good news for West Cork restaurants with Dede at the Custom House in Baltimore retaining its two Michelin stars while its sister restaurant Babade also retained its Bib Gourmand.

Owner Admet Dede thanked his amazing team for their success as well as their suppliers, farmers and producers and all the West Cork community for their support.

Restaurant Chestnut in Ballydehob also retained their one Michelin Star with owners Rob Krawczyk and Elaine Fleming also thanking their incredible team, guests, suppliers and neighbours
