MACROOM man Morgan McSweeney has resigned as Kier Starmer’s chief of staff.

As director of campaigns for the British Labour Party, Morgan McSweeney was credited with masterminding the party’s landslide victory in the July 2024 general election.

However, he became the fall guy for Kier Starmer’s decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as the UK ambassador to the US.

It is alleged that Morgan McSweeney had a role in advocating for the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Washington ambassador, but some analysts believe that his decision to resign was a case of him falling on his sword and offering a lifeline to the embattled Prime Minister.

Morgan McSweeney is the son of Macroom-based accountant Tim McSweeney and his wife Carmel.

It was while studying for a politics degree at Middlesex University that he first filled in for a Labour Party receptionist and rapidly rose through the ranks.

Morgan’s first cousin Clare Mungovan, who is also from Macroom, was equally well connected politically having served as a special adviser to the former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

Morgan McSweeney first made print in The Southern Star in 1982, as the mascot for Macroom’s GAA team, after they won the county championship.
