FOUR Cork-based conservation projects have been awarded funding under a €1.1 million scheme to bolster peatlands conservation throughout Ireland.

The community-led schemes will share in more than €125,000 in funding aimed at volunteer groups in promoting awareness of, and engagement with our natural heritage and environment.

‘I’m delighted to announce these projects. My department is directly investing in a diverse swath of important conservation projects around the country, with some important projects based here in Cork,’ said Minister for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity Christopher O’Sullivan.

The Cork projects in line for funding include Skibbereen’s Myross Wood Special Area of Conservation, the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and StreamScape.

‘Each of these projects promotes engagement with our natural heritage and environment through either researching endangered species, removing invasive ones or restoring peatlands,’ said Minister O’Sullivan.

‘It’s so important that these initiatives are community-led and community focused because it will enable them not just restore, but enhance their natural environments.’

The projects awarded funding are StreamScape CLG’s Kenmare Bay: Stories Science and Stewardship (€30,612), Green Skibbereen CLG’s Myross Woods SAC (€18,000), as well as the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group’s Porpoise movement tracking program (€36,841).

Nature Network Ireland’s Visions for Peatlands Youth Programme was awarded €40,000.

The scheme aims to encourage local initiatives focused on the conservation and revitalisation of Natura 2000 Special Areas of Conservation (SAC), Special Protection Areas (SPA), and all peatland locations.

It is aimed at community-led and volunteer groups and promotes awareness of, and engagement with our natural heritage and environment.

The funding will support 53 community projects under the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme 2026.

The approved projects for this year cover a wide range of activities, including conducting surveys, outreach initiatives, and educational programmes to raise awareness.

Projects funded under the Scheme represent a collective commitment to preserving Ireland’s unique natural landscapes and biodiversity, showcasing the essential role of communities in fostering environmental stewardship.
