REPEATED flooding in the village of Ring has been described as ‘an old chestnut’ by councillors who say the issue is frequently raised as an ongoing concern but the problem persists.

High tides and heavy rainfall cause the road to the village to flood. Sometimes motorists take alternate routes to their destination, but those who drive through tend to make the situation worse.

Some properties in the area have been repeatedly damaged by floodwater.

Despite this, an application for €47,000 for minor works, which was submitted by the council to the Office of Public Works in August 2023, was rejected on the basis that the scheme did not meet the funding requirement.

County engineer, Brendan Meagher, said the application sought funds to carry out wall repairs and to use non-return valves to contain surface water.

He assured councillors at a monthly meeting of the Western Division that Cork County Council’s roads department would reassess the scope of the work.

Cllr John Michael Foley (FG) who regularly highlights the need to provide proper surface water drainage reminded council officials that Ring recently flooded again, causing significant damage.

Cllr Daniel Sexton (Ind Ire) said the problem needs to be resolved.

‘The road to Ring floods very regularly at high tides so it would be good if we could, at the very least, put up a sign to stop cars from going down there and making the situation worse.’

The county engineer gave an undertaking to ‘take another look at that and consider a temporary traffic management system’.
