MACROOM-BASED Cygnum Holdings Ltd is set to be acquired by Grafton Group plc, the owner of Chadwicks.

The specialist supplier and installer of timber-frame structures confirmed the deal earlier this week, subject to approval by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).

Grafton intends to operate Cygnum alongside Chadwicks, its market-leading distribution business.

Cygnum said the acquisition represents a significant and positive milestone for the business, its employees, customers, and suppliers.

The company was established in 1997. In 2025, it supplied and installed circa 1,250 timber frame housing units and a recent investment programme has increased that capacity to circa 2,500 units per annum.

With more than 25 years of experience in the design and manufacture of high-quality timber frame structures, the multi-award-winning company has delivered projects across a wide range of sectors, including large-scale housing developments, hotels, apartment buildings, care homes, and schools.

Headquartered in Macroom, Co. Cork, Cygnum has made significant investments in state-of-the-art automation, enabling the company to expand its manufacturing capacity and meet growing demand for modern methods of construction. As a result of a major shift toward timber frame housing in Ireland, Cygnum has doubled its output since 2023.

John Desmond, managing director of Cygnum Holdings Ltd, said: ‘This is a hugely positive step for our business, customers and employees. We have built a strong and loyal customer base by consistently delivering high-quality timber frame solutions.

‘Becoming part of Chadwicks Group gives us the backing, scale, and strategic support to accelerate our growth, while maintaining the service levels and relationships our customers value. ‘The business will continue to operate under its existing management team and brand ensuring continuity for customers and employees. Day-to-day operations remain unchanged, with the acquisition focused on strengthening long-term capability and growth.

This strategic move is seen as reinforcing both companies’ commitment to supporting the evolving needs of the housebuilding industry through quality, innovation, and partnership.

Chadwicks Group chief executive Patrick Atkinson said: ‘We are very pleased to have agreed a deal to acquire this well-established and well-respected business. Cygnum offers tangible solutions for faster, more efficient delivery of new homes to help address Ireland’s structural housing shortage.

‘Subject to regulatory approval, we look forward to welcoming Cygnum’s staff and experienced management team to Chadwicks Group.’
