COUNCILLORS have voted against webcasting their monthly meetings, writes Kieran O’Mahony.

Cllr Peter O’Donoghue (Aon) had previously raised a motion on webcasting pointing out that most other local authorities allow the public to view full council meetings live, and to view recordings of previous meetings.

His motion was referred to the CPG (Corporate Policy Group), which decided not to proceed with the proposal.

Officials pointed out that members of the public can attend meetings in person or remotely if they wish.

Acting chief executive Michael Lynch said it’s not a matter of hiding or disclosing public debate and these meetings are open to the general public.

‘The current systems does allow members of the public to log on remotely using Microsoft Teams. Members don’t enjoy the same rules privileges as your colleagues in the Dáil do and sometimes debates in the chamber can become heated,’ he said.

Cllr O’Donoghue disagreed with the recommendation from the CPG and asked for a decision to be made in chamber.

Councillors voted overwhelmingly -  by 40 to seven - in favour of the status quo and with no webcast.

Meanwhile, Cllr Joe Carroll (FF), as chair of the Western Division, highlighted his dissatisfaction and anger with what he called the constant change of council personnel within the Western Division.

‘We could have a manager for six months and then they’re gone. We are very unhappy and all we want is continuity,’ said Cllr Carroll.

He added he has the highest praise for all the staff but is frustrated with what is happening.

Cllr Danny Collins (Ind Ire) concurred.

However, Michael Lynch said it was inappropriate to have this discussion in the council chamber.
