FINTAN McCarthy has been shortlisted for the Male Athlete of the Year award at the 2025 Team Ireland Olympic Sport Awards.

The Skibbereen rower, in his first year at heavyweight level, has caught the eye, winning gold in the mixed double sculls with Mags Cremen and bronze in the men’s double sculls with Philip Doyle at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai.

Earlier in the year, he also secured European and World Cup bronzes in the men’s double sculls, demonstrating remarkable consistency across multiple events and partnerships. Ben Healy (cycling), Cian McPhillips (athletics) and Rory McIlroy (golf) are also shortlisted for the award.

Fintan, and Philip Doyle, are also in the running for the Team of the Year award – they secured a bronze medal in the men’s double sculls at the 2025 World Rowing Championships in Shanghai. The Senior Eventing Team (equestrian) and the men’s 3x3 basketball team are also shortlisted for this award.

Also, Skibbereen rowing guri Dominic Casey is shortlisted for Coach of the Year, alongside John Szaranek (swimming) and Michael O’Connor (athletics).

As Rowing Ireland’s Interim Programme Lead Coach, Dominic oversaw a remarkable 2025 season that included Fintan McCarthy’s gold in the mixed double sculls and bronze in the men’s double sculls at the World Championships, and Fiona Murtagh’s historic gold in the women’s single sculls – Ireland’s first world title in that event.

The awards ceremony takes place on December 6th, but to vote for Fintan and Dominic, click here. Voting closes on November 14th.
