Cork 0-9
Tipperary 0-11
GER McCARTHY REPORTS
‘THIS is a reality check,’ admitted Cork manager Joe Carroll after his side was stunned by Tipperary in their opening game of the Munster LGFA senior football championship.
The newly-crowned Division 1 champions were second best to Division 2 outfit Tipp at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday evening, heaping pressure on the Rebels ahead of their home clash with Waterford this Sunday.
‘Obviously, this is a reality check and our character is going to be tested to see if we can get a performance and put it up to Waterford,’ Carroll said.

Make no mistake, Tipperary were the better team. Built on a disciplined defensive structure, they frustrated Cork throughout and used goalkeeper Lauren Fitzpatrick’s willingness to push forward and create overlaps to good effect.
A below-par Cork, who laboured for scores, could have few complaints with the outcome. Now the pressure is on Carroll and his players to rescue their championship in the next round.
‘We’ll have to sit down and look at the video and see where we made mistakes,’ Carroll told The Southern Star.
‘We struggled all night to deal with the Tipperary system. They dropped players behind the ball – I suppose you could call it negative in a way – but it worked. They had us sized up fairly well and had probably seen more of us than we had of them.
‘We had a lot of half chances early on which could have changed the trajectory of the game. Maybe one or two goal chances, and we didn’t take them. When you don’t take your chances at this level, you get punished.’

Punished Cork certainly were. Managing just four scores from open play – and only one from play in the second half – underlined Tipperary’s defensive grip.
There is little time to dwell, however, with Waterford looming large.
‘Waterford are definitely one of the contenders for the Munster championship when you look at it since the start of the year. Maybe even a contender for an All-Ireland as well. We have a lot of work to do to get the girls’ heads right and see how we react,’ Carroll added.
Aimee Corcoran opened Cork’s account and only a superb Lauren Fitzpatrick save denied Rachel Leahy an early goal. That proved as good as it got for the hosts in the opening half.
Sara English levelled matters before Emma Morrissey edged Tipp in front, 0-2 to 0-1. Cork stayed patient, but after an Áine Terry O’Sullivan effort came back off the upright, the visitors struck again through Heather Spillane.
Rachel O’Regan replied, but Tipperary continued to dictate. Clara English added another before a fine Katie Quirke score for the home side was followed by points from Sara English and Morrissey (free) to make it 0-6 to 0-3.
Quirke converted a free to cut the deficit to two at the break.
Cork needed a response but found Tipperary’s defensive wall difficult to breach.
Scores from Áine Terry O’Sullivan and Quirke (free) were quickly cancelled out by Morrissey (free) and Anna Carey, before Clara English extended the lead to 0-9 to 0-6.
Two further Quirke frees, either side of a Sara English point, left just two between them entering the closing stages.
Quirke reduced the margin to the minimum as the clock ticked past 60 minutes, but her late effort for an equaliser was brilliantly blocked down. Tipperary then sealed it, working the ball upfield for centre back Niamh Martin to fist over an insurance score deep into injury time.
A memorable win for Tipperary, but a sobering night for Cork, who now face a defining test against Waterford.
