Late drama as O’Sullivan lands two-pointer to deny Glengarriff

GARNISH and Glengarriff must do it all over again after a 0-11 apiece stalemate in the Beara Junior B football final.

Glengarriff led 0-8 to 0-2 at the break in Castletownbere on Sunday, but Garnish rallied in the second half, helped by two two-pointers from Sean Terry O'Sullivan. The second of these was a long-distance free that leveled the game late on.

It was a dream start for Glengarriff, who powered into a 0-7 to 0-0 lead after 17 minutes, as Tadhg McCarthy (2), Ciarán McElhinney (2), Brian O’Sullivan, Darren Harrington, and Gearoid O’Sullivan were all on target.

Garnish had to wait until the 28th minute for their first score, from Alan O’Sullivan, before Callum McElhinney and Tuan Millem swapped scores before the break.

In a low-scoring third quarter, Naoise Jeisy scored twice for Garnish, following a Sean Terry O'Sullivan free, to cut the gap to 0-8 to 0-5. Soon, Garnish were level, as Sean Terry nailed his first two-pointer and then Brian Terry O’Sullivan added a '45'.

Similar to the opening half, it was the team against the wind that struggled to score. Glengarriff had to wait 21 minutes for their first score of the second half when Callum McElhinney nudged them back in front. Sean McCarthy soon doubled their lead to 0-10 to 0-8.

Tuan Millem cut the gap to a single point with five minutes left, before Callum McElhinney struck again, as Glengarriff led by two with minutes left. There was late, late drama, with Sean Terry scoring the match-leveling two-pointer. Now they must do it all over again.
